What age do children start nursery and school?
My son is 18 months now and I was just wondering what age he would start nursery and school? He was born the beginning of Febuary. Should I be putting his name on a waiting list now or is it still a bit early
Sorry I ment goverment run nursery
I think your child is old enough to start nursery school.
He will learn social skills but just remember, it will seem like the wrong thing in the beginning when he cries every time you take him to school because of anxiety separation from you, but this is normal.
Good luck!

In my area (South West England) there are NO government run nurseries - just private ones that cost £100 a week, and they except children between 1 month and 4 years old.
At 4 years old they start Primary School.

In England:
Pre-School=2yrs-reception (so around 4.11 years).
Nursery=Term after child turns 3 to reception (so up to 5)
School=Term the child turns 5!
So for your son:
Pre-School: Put name down now, he will be due to start from February depending on the setting-wouldnt be funded though-funding starts term AFTer child's 3rd birthday which would be April (spring term).
Nursery: Put name down at about 2 and a bit depending on how busy your area is. Most setting go by date of birth now not first come first served! He'd be funded from April after he's 3!
School: Once he is in nursery they will usually let you know when to register at local schools. It will depend on school as some do termly admissions, others yearly. May be worth popping to schools your interested in once he turns 3 years old.

Other people have already confirmed when you should be allying and when your child will start.
However, as a child care worker, I would suggest looking into which school/nursery you want your child to attend now!
If there are a few options open to you it is well worth ’shopping around’.
I would also recommend totally ignoring school result tables! They are worked out by percentages, which favours bigger schools. This doesn’t by any means make them the best school.
Think more about where your child would be happy! A happy child will always learn!

Children can go into a nursery school or nursery class the year they are 3 years of age. You will need to put his name down for a place.
If you want a nursery place before he is 3 you would need to apply to a community day nursery, but you usually have to pay for these unless your child has special needs or is on the Child Protection Register.
Children start school in the September following their 4th birthday.Every authority has a different system for registering children for school so you need to find out what this is for your area.
