What age do babies go to nursery & school?
Just wandering what ages as my freinds baby is at nursery and she is only 6 months. Not sure but when is it free for kids to go to nursery and school in the UK?
It depends what type of nursery you are looking at. At the age of three your child is entitled to vouchers for five sessions of nursery care a week. This completely covers the cost of nursery/preschool units attatched to schools and state run nursery care. However, most independant or privately run nurseries will take children as young as three months into childcare. This is where you would send your child if you were returning to work and in this instance you would be charged. For example my two year old goes two mornings a week, 8:30- 1:30 and has his lunch there, this costs me £48 a week, including the cost of the cooked lunch he receives. If you are a single parent in work or a couple both in work then you may be eligible for the childcare element of tax credits which can pay up to 80% of these costs. I dont work, as I am a stay at home mum with other children so we pay this ourselves. When my son is three, if I wish to keep him at this nursery and use his nursery vouchers I will still have to pay a top up, as the vouchers are for five 2 and a half hour sessions, and where he goes the sessions are four hours.
Children begin school normally the term before they turn five, and school is free, unless you choose to privately educate your child, in which case fees vary from school to school. However, even then you will be expected to pay for trips, clubs, usually lunches, possibly transport and other extras. Hope this helps.

In Scotland you need to be put on a waiting list for free pre-school nurseries and I am pretty sure that most don't get them. At 3yrs old the nursery gets money from the government to reduce nursery costs for toddlers. But it is only fully free when the go to primary school at either 4 or 5.
Your friend will be paying quite a lot for her baby to go to nursery but the costs reduce as the child gets older.

Wow, no daycare is free here in the US, unless you are on a government program. And they cant start school until they are 5, which then of course its free.

My son was in nursery from 6 weeks. He is nearly two and will start prep school soon. Not council funded but prefer private, with council you barely get a few hours, would hardly get my shopping done in that time.

In my household, they go to school when they reach college-though they are certainly welcome to take some of those classes based at home as well.
I am not in the UK, though, so I can not answer your question.
